Abstract

The quest to move professional nursing education to the collegiate system has been on for decades. No meaningful action has been taken on that. The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria had set the year 1990 as the final date for moving nursing education in Nigeria to the collegiate system. Unfortunately, by 1989, there was no evidence whatsoever that this lofty dream will be achieved. The Graduate Nurses Association of Nigeria (GNAN) now known as the University Graduates of Nursing Science Association (UGONSA) dedicated the keynote address of its National Professional Conference of 1990 to the collegiate nursing education to add traction to the conversation on moving the nursing profession forward through the collegiate system of education.
