It is impossible to divorce physical health from mental health. Man as a gregarious animal derives satisfaction from his association with others. Man is the most sophisticated among all the living things. However, his advancement and sophistry are not without a price. Man is besieged by a myriad of problems, especially from his environment. His environment represents an important factor in determining his behaviour. The environment gratifies man's needs and at the same time contains regions of danger and insecurity. Of all the health problems encountered by man, the one which affects his mind is the most devastating. Since the declaration of the Primary Healthcare at Alma-Ata in 1978, greater emphasis has been paid to physical and physiological health with little emphasis on mental health. This paper seeks to examine the utilization pattern of a psychiatric-mental health hospital, including its staffing, patient population, rate of admissions, and nature of illnesses.
